Arrival Options

Ways your team can arrive at the fire, at Windy Hill Ranch or at the Cave Creek group site in the Tonto National Forest.

Option one

Windy Hill Ranch

A private ranch in the desert foothills of Cave Creek, about 18 minutes from The Boulders.

Hike in

Hiking in to Windy Hill

About 2 miles · about an hour · mostly a gentle downhill
Map of the hike from the Dragonfly trailhead to Windy Hill Ranch

Your team starts at the Dragonfly trailhead at Jewel of the Creek, on the southern edge of Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area. The trail follows Cave Creek through cottonwood and mesquite for about 0.8 mile. From there a guide from our team leads the final mile across the desert to Windy Hill Ranch, where the fire and drinks are waiting.

We'd set out around 4:30 so the group walks in just as the sun sets at 5:33. Comfortable walking shoes are all anyone needs.

The venue owner hasn't walked this route themselves, so Joseph and I will hike it ourselves first to make sure it works from start to finish.

A guide from our team walks the whole hike with your group, from the trailhead all the way to the venue. Hike guide $200.
Ride at MTM

Sunset Ride at MTM Ranch

Riders among saguaros at MTM Ranch MTM Ranch corral Riders below the cliffs

Your team starts at MTM Ranch, a working horse ranch on Spur Cross Road that has guided rides here since 1989. Wranglers match each person to a horse and lead a one hour sunset ride on the ranch's own private trails, which are closed to hikers and bikes. The ride winds through canyons of old saguaros and up and over the desert foothills as the light turns gold. It suits first-time riders.

Both options below start with this ride. Back at the barn, the team either walks in to Windy Hill or takes a stagecoach in.

The same one hour sunset ride at MTM Ranch, then everyone leaves the horses at the barn and walks to Windy Hill Ranch together. The walk follows the trail that runs beside Spur Cross Road, Morning Star Road and 54th Street, on flat ground, and ends down the ranch lane to the fire. We start the ride a little earlier so the group walks in as the sun sets.

Ride at MTM, then stagecoach in

Stagecoach route from MTM Ranch to Windy Hill Ranch

Everyone climbs out of the saddle and into two horse-drawn stagecoaches. The coaches follow Spur Cross Road, Morning Star Road and 54th Street to Windy Hill Ranch, which takes 10 to 20 minutes depending on whether the horses walk or trot, and bring the whole team through the gate together right at sunset, as the fire is lit.

Option two

Cave Creek Group Site

The remote option. A 1930s campground in a quiet valley of the Tonto National Forest, about 55 minutes from The Boulders.

Ride and walk

Sunset Ride on Cave Creek Trail and a Walk to the Fire

About 2.5 miles out and back · about 1 hour 15 minutes · then a 4 minute walk

Seven Springs in the fall, right by the group site.

Your team meets the wranglers and horses at the Cave Creek Trailhead on Seven Springs Road. A Forest Service permitted outfitter leads the ride along Cave Creek Trail #4, beside the creek under the sycamores and cottonwoods, out 1.25 miles to a quiet bend at the water for photos, then back toward the trailhead as the sun goes down. It's an easy pace for first-time riders.

Back at the trailhead everyone dismounts and walks about four minutes up the road to the group site, where the wood fire is already going. Horses aren't allowed inside the group site, so the short walk is part of the plan.

2:50 PMVans leave The Boulders (about 55 minutes, the last 9 miles on gravel)

The site

The Campground

Cave Creek Group Site, also called Seven Springs · Tonto National Forest
Covered ramada with stone picnic tables Fire ring beside the ramada Shaded open area under juniper and sycamore Group site gate Vault toilets

The Civilian Conservation Corps built this campground in the 1930s. It sits in a narrow valley shaded by juniper and sycamore, with a small creek running through. The site is reserved for one group at a time and has two large covered ramadas, stone picnic tables, grills, a covered food prep area, a fire ring for the evening fire, vault toilets and trash service. We set dinner under the ramadas and bring in everything else.

How we plan around each one
Because we're producing the evening on National Forest land, this option is confirmed once the Forest Service approves our permit.
